Blackjack newsgroups are different from chat rooms in that messages are
posted on an electronic bulletin board, which can then be responded to
or not depending on the inclination of the visitor, and these messages
remain indefinitely. You must go to the newsgroup to read and post
messages. You will see messages posted by experienced gamblers,
beginners, kooks who have their own ax to grind, experts, and Internet
casino operators. You can pose questions for others to respond to, you
can respond to others' questions, and you can comment on any aspect of
gambling you wish. All messages are posted on the newsgroups' bulletin
boards for all to see and read as they choose. Some newsgroups are
moderated, which means that a moderator looks at each message before it
is posted to determine whether or not it meets the newsgroup's criteria
as being fit to post.
Some of the types of messages you may see at newsgroups and message boards are as follows:
- messages from online casinos that offer answers to questions posed,
but give you a link to or the address of their online casino and a
reason to visit it;
- messages from webmasters promoting their web sites as sources
of blackjack information and inviting you to visit by clicking on a
hyperlink embedded in their post; at many such sites you will find
enticements to visit the online casinos with which the Webmaster is
associated; out and out spam promoting links to online casinos or other
money-making schemes; legitimate questions from blackjack players
looking for answers; where can I find one- or two-deck games in Las
Vegas?;
- trip reports from gamblers, some complete with pictures,
containing details of their winning trips and how they did it, and also
many containing advice (usually outdated) on good deals on where to eat,
stay, travel, etc;
- invitations from systems sellers to visit their site, at which you will find descriptions of books and systems for sale;
- news reports on who's doing what in the world of gambling and
casinos; i.e. who's selling which property, who's moving up, who died,
which casino is up for sale, or sold, etc;
- debates about some aspect of gambling that can carry on for
hours or even days or weeks; usually these debates will start with the
participants on friendly terms with each side presenting its opinions in
a logical manner, but if the subject being debated is controversial, it
may quickly break down with participants on each side hurling insults
at each other. A total of fifty-seven messages comprised one recent
debate with the ending message from a neutral person being: Many of us
are (too) forthcoming on these NGs, and there is a nonnegligible risk
that people who are not well-informed will be persuaded by those with
the facade of expertise in the area of games of chance. Very good
advice, indeed.
These days it is generally advisable to to stay away from the
gambling-related newsgroups. They are very timeconsuming and mostly a
forum for hotheads who stubbornly spew uninformed opinions. Granted,
bits of useful information can be found from time to time. But, the
amount of time to weed through all the spam and the inane debete threads
does not justify the end results. Although if you're the type who
thrives on debate and have the time, these newsgroups can provide a
never-ending supply of arguments and discussions to join.
